Duck Dive - happy hour visit

We're slowly working through our giftcards from Burger Week and decided to hit up happy hour at Duck Dive in Pacific Beach. To avoid Friday traffic, we took a lovely yet roundabout drive through La Jolla scenic drive. This place has a view of the ocean from the patio and is only a few blocks down from Garnet Avenue. Sitting and relaxing in the patio area with our friends was so refreshing because of the cool ocean breeze along the building.

happy hour at Duck Dive

Happy hour is Monday through Friday between 3-6pm. Almost everything in the "snacks" menu section is $5 plus there were $5 drink specials! Pictured is the first round ordered.

Duck Fat Fries at Duck Dive

These Duck Fat Fries were addictive to me for some reason. I loved the thin shoe string size. Not too crispy or too soft or oily with a agreeable level of salt plus three different sauces to try! We kept going back for the middle barbecue sauce but there was also an aioli and a mayo based white sauce.

Poke Tacos at Duck Dive

These were the Ahi Tacos. The wonton shells were unique with their square shape and held together the ingredients for the most part. The tuna was lightly coated with sesame oil but the wasabi paste was somewhat bitter, throwing me off, plus I'm not a fan of wasabi. Dennis mentioned there was another flavor to it that he didn't quite like either. These weren't as good as the ahi tacos we recently had at San Diego Poke Company or even the ones I had from Taste of Point Loma.

dragon wings at Duck Dive

These were called Dragon Wings and were coated with an asian flavor similar to oyster sauce. The overall texture was chewy and wet like boiled chicken with skin covered with sauce. Even the chicken meat was somehwat hard to pull off the bone. I wish it had been fried first, or at least it didn't taste that way.

happy hour drinks at Duck Dive

Dennis ordered a Blueberry Mojito which he thought was a bit watered down. I got a strawberry type drink, light and easy for a summer afternoon.

dive fish tacos at Duck Dive

We also tried a second round of happy hour food. These Dive Fish Tacos with mahi mahi were a little on the dry side. Maybe a little more seasoning would have been nice too. The mangos were sort of placed on it rather than integrated into a mango salsa which would have melded better. The whole dish didn't really fit together as well as we had hoped.

voodoo tacos at Duck Dive

The Voodoo Tacos were more like burrito tacos because they were wrapped! We also liked how the tortilla was slightly toasted. The salmon inside was well cooked but still flaky, much better than the previous tacos. We couldn't taste 'sriracha' as listed in the ingredients but the peppery dry seasoning worked for us. This was definitely the most filling item we ordered!

entrance to Duck Dive in Pacific Beach

Service at Duck Dive was attentive; we got water refills when needed and were able to order food when we wanted. Overall, the happy hour food here just seems ok but at least it's cheap as are the drinks. I've heard that the regular entree sandwiches are good but that would have to be for another visit. I still would like to explore more of PB so maybe we'll take another scenic drive out to this area... though who knows where we'd end up!

Note: Generally Dennis takes pictures when we dine together but these were taken by me! ^_~

I've heard nice things about this restaurant. How was parking? That's sad the chicken wings tasted boiled. The wonton tacos are funny and unique with their shape. I think the photos are awesome!

i believe their sandwiches are the way to go. we got to PB right before 5pm on a Friday and parked one street down. i'm guessing it was too early for the college kids plus it's still summer break. gah i wonder if we got a fluke on the chicken. i can't believe anyone would want to eat wings that have that gummy kind of skin!

Good pictures but it sounds like the fries were the only really good thing I'd like...
