Blackbird Tavern - Temecula, CA
After attending a cousin's wedding in Temecula, we decided to explore a little more of Old Town Temecula. We had noticed Blackbird Tavern when we ate across the street at the popular Cuban spot Havana Kitchen. It happened to be Father's Day (though we're not parents yet) and Blackbird Tavern was already half full (much busier than last time we peeked inside with 2-3 tables).
A huge advertising blackboard was to the right of the entrance. According to this, Blackbird Tavern had been open since 2013! Opposite of the board was a loungy couch in the corner space near the hostess stand. A smiling employee walked us over to our table soon after. Jose was our friendly waiter taking care of us that morning.
Chicken and Waffles ($13) - brined chicken, bacon and cheddar waffle, pure maple syrup, chicken veloute
I saw chicken and waffles on the brunch menu and couldn't resist ordering them! This dish was our favorite item of the day. The thinly pounded chicken was deep fried for 2-3 minutes giving it a extra crispy batter while the meat stayed moist. There was a nice saltiness to the chicken which paired well with the thicker consistancy of the light gravy. The waffles were super fluffy but the infused flavors were too subtle. You can see the bacon pieces in there but only a touch of the cheese. I think my favorite infused waffle is still Fremont Diner during a Norcal wine trip. Maple syrup is usually too sweet for me so I requested extra gravy for dipping the waffles. I used ALL of that yummy gravy.
Short Rib Hash ($12) - braised short ribs, onions, peppers, potatoes, poached eggs, red eye gravy, sourdough toast
Another item that we ordered was the short rib hash. The shredded meat was tender enough and retained some moisture to it as well. The eggs didn't gush upon popping (usually my favorite part) but still that beautiful golden yolkiness inside. The potatoes and veggies could have used a little more oil frying which would have given it that irresistable extra flavor. Overall this dish was average.
Seasonal Mule ($8) and BB Old Fashioned ($8)
For drinks, the seaonal mule was the peach basil flavor on that day. Dennis felt it had an aftertaste, with a little too much peach schnapps and not enough ginger beer. Jose offered to replace the drink and Dennis requested the old fashioned. This new drink had a wonderfully strong bourbon taste which was much appreciated by him.
There's the big bar in the middle of the restaurant for lounging and drinking. Most people were dining in the surrounding areas with friends and family for the Father's Day holiday.
This place shows potential for a fabulous evenings out with friends. Check out those huge firepits in the huge backyard area! Our server took great care of us that day and we enjoyed a nice brunch together. Blackbird Tavern seems like a relatively chill place to eat during the day with plenty of options during the nights as well. What's your favorite pub to visit?

It looks like a nice place to spend the evening with friends. Relax atmosphere.
love the open space. found some 'party' pics online and it does seem to get packed!
Chicken looks good. Was it white meat or dark meat?
i believe it was white meat. i love boneless fried chicken! ;)
Lynn, thanks for this review. We're expecting to drive to Temecula at the end of the year and we'll have to stop in at this pub. I always thought combing meat with waffles and syrup would be a strange idea but I see this dish pop up from time to time- I'll have to give it a try!
chicken and waffles is such a popular southern comfort food! one of the most famous places is rosco's and i've never been there (also a bit of a drive and long wait). i'm just making my way around as i see 'em.
Putting this on my list for next time we visit family in S. CA.
there are several tasty spots in Temecula. I'd recommend the Cuban place Havana Kitchen across the street. It's super delicious!
Chicken and waffles are always a hit anywhere you go.. I love food in general, and I'm always looking for new spots..
Not always good everywhere but this was a decent version. I could just eat the fried chicken part from here. I've had better waffles though.
