Harmon's Barbecue / Cibolo TX

As much as I love Cali, it's still nice to visit the home state of Texas once in a while. There was also a small mission set for this trip... check out some of the Texas BBQ scene that I missed while growing up here. The only BBQ joint I remember eating was the local joint. They practically catered for the whole town, including at my mom's wedding! I needed to expand that experience!

We met my high school friend and her family at Harmon's BBQ, which was close by their home. Immediately to the left of the restaurant is a BBQ Crossing! I already thought that was a good sign! Pun intended. You can also glimpse a peek at their smoker in the shed. Not sure why they didn't lock the gate per the sign.

Here's the restaurant entrance. It's the same wooden color as the walls so you could miss it if you weren't paying attention. That may have happened to us...

There were all kinds of colorful metal signs on the walls. I also liked this logo'ed straw and floral wreath. You can also help yourself to slices of bread at the condiment bar, as well as cut up pickles and onions.

We let our friends order for this visit. First up was 2 lbs of brisket, 1 lb of lean and 1 lb of moist. The lean meat was somewhat drier, almost as if it were smoked a second time after being cut, giving it a stronger flavor than the other meat. The moist brisket was excellent, succulent meat from melted fat, yet it wasn't consistent. Some areas had just a little bit too much fat still intact. The lighter meat next to the brisket was smoked turkey, a great meat choice. I was expecting it to be dry like most white turkey meat but was surprised by the moisture retained in these bites. We found the side of potato salad to be agreeable.

As a side, we tried their creamed corn, which tasted a bit like gravy and corn. Dennis usually hates cream corn but gobbled that up fast! I still prefer the more traditional style. We also sampled the pinto beans though they were on the saltier side.

Another meat we ordered were the Pork Ribs, huge with long bones. The meat was tender and topped with a thin black bark which was phenomenal. Dennis usually is more into beef than pork but he was more than satisfied with this version.

Here's my plate though I ate more than what is shown! We had plenty of food for four adults and one child. Another option we considered was the sausage but were told it was just 'okay' here. We wouldn't have had room anyway.

Harmon's Barbecue was a cute place to dine and catch up with friends. It didn't take too long for the food to come out and service was pleasant and friendly. It seems worth checking out if you are in San Antonio or further east of San Antonio area.

Mmm... Texas bbq. I've been trying to win a trip there all year. No luck yet. *sigh The ribs and brisket look so good... Must go out for bbq this weekend and try to satisfy that craving that's growing in my belly.

p.s. Like that rustic look and the awesome wood shed.

Did you find a BBQ place to grub? I have quite a few restaurants to catch up on, including Coops BBQ. That'll be posted later in November.

Made me hungry reading this review Lynn! When you told me you're from TX at lunch the other day, I figured you must have grown up eating lots of great Que. Never too late to start! I agree with Soo ( hey Soo, nice to see you on here!) Grand Ole BBQ is good, I really liked his ribs.

Oh yeah, Grand Ole BBQ has only been open maybe 6 weeks and has been all over EDSD too. I've only been once, and was UBER impressed with something I never heard of before and it blew me away...Texas Turkey! So tender, so flavorful, tasty beyond belief! And it was white meat! We're thinking of getting it for Thanksgiving! I've also had his ribs and really loved them too. Haven't had his brisket yet, he only does that at night. Has a side dish that was also so good..Peruvian beans. Ya gotta go!

I remember liking the turkey here. I will try the Texas turkey when we visit Grand Ole BBQ. I have one more BBQ place to post first though...
