Slater's 50/50 (San Marcos)
Dennis and I met up with two of our friends to celebrate some birthdays. They suggested Slater's 50/50 so I figured it would be a good time to use my giftcard. The appeal of Slater's is their special 50/50 patty that is half beef and half bacon. Plus, they have some kick-ass bacon flavors to choose from.
The San Marcos location was packed but we were still able to get a table within 5 minutes. I feel like the Point Loma one is much busier so this is a good option if you really want your 50/50 patty!
B' B' B' Bacon Burger - 50/50 patty, thick cut bacon, bacon American cheese, sunny side up egg, bacon island dressing, bacon pretzel bun
One of our friends picked the trilogy of B's. It's pretty much the standard burger that is showcased during tasting events such as the Yelp Halloween Party last year. That egg yolk pops and gets all over the place. Yummy.
Peanut Butter and Jellousy Burger - Brandt beef, thick cut bacon, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, honey wheat bun
This is like a PB&J sandwich with a patty in the middle. It sounds somewhat weird but then you think... maybe it's not such a bad idea after all. I took a bite and thought the sweet and salty worked surprisingly well with the meat though I'd have to split or quarter a burger as to not get overwhelmed later.
Sriracha Burger - Sriracha spiced 50/50 patty, honey Sriracha bacon, pepper jack, charred yellow onion, Sriracha sauteed mushrooms, Sriracha coleslaw, Sriracha mayo, telera roll
Dennis got a sriracha burger. The best part for him was the honey sriracha bacon, which reminded him of some bomb tasty wings from the past. As for the patty, he was less enthused. Nothing beats the natural flavor of a beef patty and the addition of sriracha was a little overwhelming. The burger itself didn't seem spicy at first but the accumulation of all the flavors got hotter and hotter, with a mouth on fire at the end of the meal. He kept trying to pass it to me and I kept pushing it back, emphasizing that it had SRIRACHA in it. No thanks. He declared he would build his own burger next time and add that same bacon!
Customized Burger - beef patty, gouda cheese, pretzel bun, roasted red pepper, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, rosemary garlic bacon (additional charge)
I got the all beef patty because I wasn't feeling the half and half patty that day. The pretzel bun sounded awesome but turned out to be a little too hard and thick for the burger. I also forgot to add sauce so asked for some on the side. The meat patty isn't seasoned much so I guess it's all from the rest of the ingredients you add. This was a juicy mess cooked medium rare. Not all that exciting though. Maybe I'll go with a pre-built burger next time.
Crispy Brussel Sprouts - mustard & white balsamic vinaigrette, shaved parmesan, bacon, fried sage
We also shared an appetizer. These brussel sprouts were somewhat oily but in a good way. It was a little too wilted though and Dennis mentioned that the parmesan cheese wasn't melted. It doesn't usually, my darling! And of course, bacon bits were everywhere.
We redeemed the birthday offer from their email club, which was a complimentary brownie. I don't think a purchase is required. It's definitely not a full size brownie, at least based on the 'discount' in the bill. It did have bits of bacon on top too, but not enough haha! Standard brownie so no additional comments.
There are SO MANY POSSIBILITIES here. I like this Andy Warhol inspired art on the wall
Here's more dining artwork at this location.
This place can be lots of fun though. They've got a full bar and run promotions like trivia night (where my gift card originally came from) and I'm sure if you customize your burger right, it may turn out to be a damn good burger. I may have to find that perfect combination on my next visit though I think it will be awhile until I return. So many burgers to try, so little time!

Slater's 50/50 is one of those places that I really want to like, but just haven't been super impressed by :\ Maybe the flavor combos or toppings just don't work for me, especially compared with my all-time favorite Hodad's which is just spot-on to me. Their 50/50 patty is actually half ground beef and half ground bacon.
thanks for the correction. yea, sadly i'm not too impressed with this place either. i found some tasty burgers during burger week so hopefully will post that soon (a couple months after the fact)!
This has been on my list to try forever! I would totally get the Peanut Butter and Jellousy... if for no other reason than the name! There was a place in ATL that had a Elvis burger - complete with grilled bananas, bacon, and PB.
ooh that sounds like something worth trying! maybe slaters could add bananas to their build your own burger ingredients list... haha :)
I'd go with the triple B burger. Taste great every time I had a sample at yelp events. :-)
yea that burger is usually pretty good, especially if they are grilling it fresh!
