The Field Authentic Irish Pub
I'm a member of a few local radio/tv stations (93.3 and CBS8) and recently redeemed for a free lunch for 2 voucher at The Field Authentic Irish Pub in downtown.
Dennis and I were both STARVING when we met at The Field for lunch around 1:30pm. I blame this in part to my silly idea of attending the 85 Degree Bakery grand opening, which took away 3 hours of my life. Thank goodness Dennis is a patient husband and waited it out for me.
We looked over the menu and I selected the Chicken Whiskey Boxty ($15). The menu explains a Boxty as "A homemade potato Pancake cooked on a griddle. Originating from the Gaelic word “bactasi” referring to tradition of cooking potatoes on a open fire." The meals come with your choice of soup, salad or chips. I chose the soup of the day, which was potato leek soup. It was creamy and not too grainy from potatoes and salted just right for my taste.
Inside my potato pancake was chicken, reminding me of chicken pot pie plus creamy Alfredo on top. I rather enjoyed this dish. That pancake was maybe 1/4 inch thick and the insides were gushing goodies! There were a few greens on the side but no dressing. We were wondering what it was there for... were we supposed to add it to the chicken or eat a la carte?
Dennis ordered the Banger Burger ($12) which contains a patty with a half sausage and half beef mixture. I thought the seasoning was a little too close to breakfast sausage which I don't really care for. It turned out to be alright for him but I don't think we'd order it again because it was a bit greasy. Dennis chose chips which means the thicker steak fries in irish pub land. These were fried enough ie not mushy but we always prefer thinner. They were also salted decently.
Surprisingly we were way too full for dessert so we made up for it later with snacks from 85 Degree Bakery.
It's somewhat dark in there, which is no surprise for a bar type establishment. We would have eaten outside for better lighting but there was a smoker there, boo hoo! The lunch prices aren't too bad for downtown. None of the dishes needed additional seasoning so I'd consider the food experience more or less a success, especially the Boxty meals!

Lynn, thanks for this informative review. Looks like the kind of restaurant I won't be 'breaking down the doors' to visit- but I'm still intrigued with the 85 Degree Bakery (minus the long lines, of course)!
wrong post? anyway, hope you get a chance to try out some yummies here or at 85 degree bakery one day!
The Boxty kind of looks like a cross between chicken pot pie and enchiladas! A potato pancake wrapper sounds really good to me, too, and the creamy sauce on top looks extra tasty. Nice choice! Good to know the radio station member deals actually work haha. :)
i'd order it again. the rewards programs do work but require time and effort. this one i kind of stumbled across while it was available. most of them are luck-based... ie you gotta be online at the right time or have enough points :(
