Enjoy some chips and salsa while you wait for your dinner…

Ceviche ($10) - First of all, I was surprised at the bountiful amount of shrimp that was hidden underneath the red onion, avocado, tomato, cilantro, and wedge of lime. This was delicious with the lime.

Chicken Mole with green beans and some kind of squash ($18) - I wasn’t too thrilled with the jasmine rice. It tasted like vinegar. The chicken was a little dry and I didn’t like the chocolate mole sauce. I couldn’t taste the chocolate. I guess I was expecting something else…

Enchilada con Pollo ($14) - I enjoyed the moist and tender chicken enchiladas. The three enchiladas were stuffed with chicken, salsa roja, beans, rice, and topped with queso Oaxaca. There was more than enough for me. I couldn’t even finish two enchiladas.

I wouldn’t recommend sitting outside. Little things were blowing all around. Instead, ask for a table near the window to enjoy the view of the lake and the docked boats. The staff was nice.

I was at SDSU today and I decided to revisit an old restaurant I used to go to. Whats good to eat there? A super sized torta sandwich! In particular, the Super Natalia Torta ($7.75). It includes roast beef, turkey, ham, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, american cheese, jalepeno, and a side of thin cut potato fries. Its approximately 4 inches high, 5 inches wide, and 6 inches long.

Oh man.. I can only eat half of it as there is so much meat packed into this sandwich! But as for the quality of meat, its only okay. Its not the high quality stuff you can get at the deli but this is still a good deal considering the big portions you receive for what you pay.

As for tackling down this monster, I can only eat parts of it at a time. Its impossible to get every layer into one big bite.

Km 49, Puerto Nuevo, B.C. 011-52-661-612-0396

A couple weekends ago we drove down to Puerto Nuevo for lunch and to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Local lobster season just ended a few days ago but the restaurants in Puerto Nuevo serve them year-round. There are lots of places in the neighborhood to choose from but we went with Ortega’s Patio, one of the nicer spots, with a beautiful ocean view patio. They started us off with piping hot chips and two kinds of salsa.

The fresh salsa was so amazingly delicious, I could have eaten it with a spoon. I’ve been mixing up salsas at home since then but I haven’t yet found the right combination. Of course, no meal in Mexico is complete without margaritas, especially double margaritas that come in fishbowl-sized goblets.

Three of us split a huge 3 pound lobster, which is first boiled and then grilled to succulent perfection. The lobster meal also came with delicious tortilla soup, rice, beans and tender, crepe-like homemade tortillas. We had fun making little tacos out of all the components. It took us a while to finish those huge margaritas so we enjoyed the sunny patio and the waterfront views while savoring every last drop and morsel.

I can’t recall the exact address of this location but its pretty hard to miss. It’s next to the church where El Cajon Blvd and 54th street crosses. You’ll see a gigantic sign on the street that says Santana on it.

Tostada and Enchilada combo with rice and beans (~$5.00)

The tostada and enchilada combo was Lynn’s meal. She had a craving for tostada and the combo seemed the best deal at the time. I believed she said the meal was okay but from the way she munched it down, I would think otherwise. Or perhaps she was just really hungry. =)

Carne Asada Chips (~$6.00)

This meal had a really cheesy and creamy feel to it. There were two types of cheeses sprinkled all over and lots of guacomole and sour cream mixed around into the meat. The meat was pretty good. It wasn’t dry but it could have been juicer. Oh, and don’t order pollo chips. I ordered it the last I was here and it was very oily and barely tolerable. Also, they don’t give that many chips as Cojita does but this meal does fill a single person.

Something to note.. If you’re planning on riding rollercoaster attractions after eating this meal, then don’t! That’s all I’m going to say..

When I think of foods I want to eat, Mexican food does not cross my mind often. There aren’t too many dishes that appeal to me and it’s a bit unhealthy for my taste. Think of all that cheese and what not… But, two places can win me over. One is El Caribe in North County San Diego, and the other is Fred’s Mexican Cafe. If you want some delicious, yet healthier than most other mexican food, these two are the places to go.

At Fred’s, I ordered the grilled mahi mahi burrito (5.49), which is a darn-right tasty burrito. I’ve ordered the mahi tacos before as well and those are also superb. I like mahi anything if it tastes right!

Being the picky eater that I am, I don’t order mexican combo platters because I’m not a fan of the rice and beans BUT my cousin Hai isn’t that way. He ordered the chicken enchiladas (5.49), which he thought were good, but not as filling as my burrito. The sides were standard grub.

On Tuesdays, they have:
Kiss my Taco Tuesdays

for only 1.50 a taco! Now that’s a sweet deal! More mahi tacos for me please!

This place has some good happy hour specials with huge margarita glasses for around 2 bucks I think? This is a decent place to eat before going out for the night, especially if you’re already going to be in the Pacific Beach area.
